Phenobarb

by Lindsay Lee Hand

Turn on the light for her
She can't see your face
Come closer, get closer
So she can push you away
Into the light of the day

Watch how the flowers bend
It's too black over there
She opens the window,
And throws them out with the vase
Into the light of the day

Somehow, somewhere, somebody knows
THey can see that she watches
That she hides in the dark
How carefully she breathes in and out
Into the light of the day

She listens and can hear your heart beat
Screaming as she pulls out her hair
And the grasses writhe and twist
So that the sky can open up
Into the light of the day

Winds tremble throught the trees
As her vision starts to blur
The walls around her crumble to dust
Whispering words that soothe
Into the light of the day
